LinkPatrol Privacy Policy.
Last updated: October 7, 2026
The short version
LinkPatrol checks the links on the page you are viewing, inside your own browser. The pages you check and their links never reach our servers. Each link check goes straight from your browser to the site the link points to, without your cookies. The extension has no analytics. From the extension, the only things that ever reach us are a licence check if you buy Pro, and your answers if you fill in the optional uninstall survey.
The pages and links you check
When you click Check links or Extract, LinkPatrol reads the links on the tab you are viewing, and nothing on other tabs.
- Links, their anchor text and rel attributes are read in your browser and shown in the side panel. They are not uploaded anywhere.
- To check a link, your browser requests that link’s URL directly (a HEAD request, then a normal GET if the HEAD fails). The site you link to sees that request the same way it would see any visitor, including your IP address.
- Checks are sent without cookies or other credentials, so they cannot sign you in or out of anything, and the linked site does not learn who you are signed in as.
- Redirect hops are read from LinkPatrol’s own requests only, and only while a check runs. Other browsing is ignored.
- Pro’s on-page SEO checks read the current page’s title, meta tags, headings, canonical and similar tags in your browser. They are not uploaded either.
What is stored on your device
Your settings (timeout, parallel requests, outlines on or off), your ignore list, today’s count of free checks, a random install identifier and, if you activate Pro, your licence key are saved in Chrome’s local extension storage.
- They stay on your device and are never sold, shared, or used for advertising or profiling.
- Uninstalling LinkPatrol deletes them.
If you activate Pro
When you paste a licence key into LinkPatrol, it is checked so Pro can switch on, and re-checked once a day so a renewed or cancelled subscription is picked up.
- What is sent: your licence key and a random install identifier created on your device when LinkPatrol was installed. The identifier contains nothing about you or what you browse.
- Where it goes: our licence server at license.tailsgate.com, which runs on Cloudflare Workers. It asks Freemius whether the key is valid. No page, link or browsing data is ever part of this.
- Freemius is our payment processor and merchant of record. When you buy Pro, you pay on Freemius’s checkout, and Freemius receives your name, email address and payment details under its own privacy policy (freemius.com/privacy). We never see your card details.
Uninstall survey
If you remove LinkPatrol, Chrome opens a short, optional feedback page on tailsgate.com. Closing the tab sends no answer.
- In the page address: the version you had and the same random install identifier.
- If you answer: the reason you tap and anything you type in the optional comment box, with that version and identifier.
- Where it goes: our server on Cloudflare Workers, stored in Cloudflare KV.
- Your IP address is not stored. It is hashed and truncated so duplicate or abusive submissions can be spotted, and the original address is never kept.
No analytics in the extension
The LinkPatrol extension contains no analytics, tracking, advertising or third-party scripts, loads no remote code, and does not record how you use it.
This website
The LinkPatrol pages on tailsgate.com count page views and button clicks (for example, which plan was clicked on the Pro page) so we can see whether the pages work. Each visit gets a random identifier kept in your browser for 30 minutes of inactivity. No cookies are used, and no IP address, nothing you type, no licence key and no email is recorded. These counts are stored with Cloudflare Workers Analytics Engine and kept for about three months.
Our processors
We use exactly two outside services, only for the purposes above:
- Cloudflare, Inc. — runs our licence server, stores uninstall survey answers, and stores the website page-view counts.
- Freemius, Inc. — sells Pro as merchant of record, processes payments, and confirms whether a licence key is valid.
- Nothing is sent to any other company. The sites your links point to receive only the request your browser makes to check each link.
Permissions
LinkPatrol asks Chrome for as little as it needs:
- activeTab: reads the links on the tab you are on when you click the LinkPatrol button, and nothing on other tabs.
- scripting: runs a small script in the current page to list its links and outline broken ones in place, only when you click Check links or Extract.
- storage: saves your settings, ignore list, today’s free-check count and your licence key on this device.
- alarms: re-checks a Pro licence once a day.
- sidePanel: shows the results beside the page, so the list never covers the links you are checking.
- webRequest: reads the redirect hops of LinkPatrol’s own link checks to show each redirect chain. It only listens while a check runs and ignores every request it did not make.
- Access to all websites (optional): requested the first time you click Check links, not at install, because checking a link means requesting its URL and links can point to any website.
Changes
If what LinkPatrol sends ever changes, we will update this page and its date before the change ships.
